Joan Sydney, who appeared in the long-running soap operas A Country Practice and Neighbours, died at the age of 83.

After a protracted illness, the British-Australian actress died last Wednesday at her Sydney home.

Sally-Anne Upton, a long-time friend and fellow actor, revealed her death on Facebook yesterday.

During the 1980s, Ms Sydney portrayed Margaret Sloan, a no-nonsense matron in A Country Practice.

In 1989, she was named best actress for the part at Australia’s annual Logie Awards for television.

She joined the cast of Neighbours in 2002, as Valda Sheergold.

Ms Sydney was born in London and spent her childhood in Wales. She studied acting at the Oldham Repertory Theatre.

At age 21, she made her acting debut in the 1957 movie adaptation of the English drama When We Are Married. In 1965, she immigrated to Perth, after which she relocated to New South Wales.

On social media, fans and musicians paid tribute to the late actress.

Ms. Upton, who co-starred with Ms. Sydney in Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries, Ms. Sydney’s final television project, wrote to her, saying, “Thank you for all you have taught me, love, friendship, and many memories shared that will be kept forever.”

Another A Country Practice cast member, Shane Withington, tweeted: “Comedy is never as simple as it seems, but this woman made it seem simple. I cherished her.”
