The United States had authorized the use of the world’s first honeybee vaccine. A report by Business Wire stated that the vaccine helps to protect bees from the American Foulbrood illness and that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has awarded a conditional license to American biotech business Dalan Animal Health Inc. for the manufacture of the vaccine.

The bacterium Paenibacillus larvae, which can weaken and kill hives, is the source of the American foulbrood illness for which the vaccine has been developed. Originating in the US, the fatal illness has since spread throughout the world.

The vaccine is provided by combining slain whole-cell Paenibacillus larvae bacteria with the queen feed that the worker bees eat, according to the report, which also stated that the worker bees absorb the vaccination into the royal jelly. As the queen consumes it and the vaccine particles are placed in her ovaries, they will finish the procedure by feeding it to her.

Dr. Anette Kleiser, CEO of Dalan Animal Health, described the vaccine as a breakthrough, saying, “In order to safeguard our pollinators and advance sustainable agriculture, we are dedicated to offering cutting-edge solutions. The necessity of honeybee pollination to ensure our food supply will increase due to the growing world population and changing temperatures.” Dr. Kleiser continued.
