King Carl, the ruler of Sweden, has been in charge for 50 years.

The King, who is already Sweden’s longest-ruling monarch, took the throne on September 15, 1973, when he was only 27 years old.

Two days of celebrations will be held in Stockholm to mark the anniversary. The palace says that on September 15, a service will be held at the Royal Palace Church, and King Carl XVI Gustaf will also be honored by a singer and watch the changing of the guard. On the same night, there will be a dinner for an anniversary.

The Swedish palace released a new photo of King Carl XVI Gustaf by photographer Thron Ullberg to mark the big year. He took a picture with a silver throne that had been given to Queen Kristina as a gift from the Council of Parliament by Magnus Gabriel de la Gardie for her coronation in 1650.

For the portrait, the King wore a uniform of an admiral that had Swedish orders of chivalry on it.

When Carl XVI Gustaf was born on April 30, 1946, his great-grandfather, King Gustaf V, was the king of Sweden. Carl Gustaf was the youngest of five children, but he was the only son of Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden and Princess Sibylla. This put him ahead of his sisters in the line to take the throne.

When Carl Gustaf was 9 months old, his father died in a plane disaster at Copenhagen Airport. This made him the heir apparent. His great-grandfather died when he was 4, making his grandfather king. He became the heir. Carl Gustaf became king in 1973 after his grandpa died.

Crown Princess Victoria is 45, Prince Carl Philip is 43, and Princess Madeleine is 40.

Princess Victoria became the official successor in 1980 when the Act of Succession was modified to incorporate absolute primogeniture. Victoria will be Sweden’s fourth queen since 1720.

Princess Estelle, Princess Victoria’s 10-year-old daughter, is second in line to the Swedish throne.
