Encanto Jared Bush discusses the Bruno “Plot Hole”

The Colombian Madrigal family is depicted in the 2021 animated film Encanto as being “wonderful and magical,” hidden in the “Encanto” during the early 1900s. Bruno is one of the family members who has been given special abilities (John Leguizamo). However, the undesirable effects of his magical ability forced him to dwell among the rats, who served as his “telenovela” cast to keep him company. Fans are confused by Bruno’s familiarity with telenovelas given the timeframe of the movie, but Jared Bush, Encanto’s co-director, has a straightforward solution to the perceived plot hole in the animated movie.

Although the movie’s soundtrack implies that “we don’t talk about Bruno,” fans undoubtedly bring up the apparent plot hole in Bruno. Given that the soapy television genre first originated between the 1930s and 1950s, one user questioned Bush about Bruno’s knowledge of telenovelas when he started an Encanto “Question and Answer” segment on his Twitter account. Bush replied, “He can see the future,” in the most blatant and plain way possible. The director’s response makes perfect sense in every way. Some people didn’t see it coming, despite the fact that the solution was already in front of them, but it has put the Bruno plot hole scandal to rest.

Bruno’s supernatural abilities allowed him to foresee the wonders of telenovelas before they even made their appearance, but they also led to his being blamed for almost any unfavorable event in his family, including the rain on his sister Pepa’s wedding day. Bruno was made to disappear and live apart from both his family and the rest of the town after his village accused him of the deaths of a pet fish and his neighbors.

The Madrigal family also comprises Pepa (Carolina Gaitán), Julieta (Angie Cepeda), Dolores (Adassa), Camilo (Rhenzy Feliz), Antonio (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Luisa (Jessica Darrow), and Isabela (Diane Guerrero), all of whom, with the exception of Mirabel, are endowed with special supernatural skills (Stephanie Beatriz). She might be able to prevent the magic of his family from vanishing despite their differences.

Even though Encanto had a dismal box office performance, it was well welcomed when it was released on Disney+ because of its relatable characters and popular songs from the soundtrack, including “We Don’t Talk about Bruno,” “What Else Can I Do?” “Surface Pressure,” “Waiting on a Miracle,” and others. Encanto won the Best Animated Feature Oscar in 2022, and “Dos Oruguitas” was nominated for Best Song. Along with touching on several subjects that aren’t frequently spoken about inside a family, the film’s themes of family conflict, trauma, sibling rivalry, the elder’s burden, and growing up different from the others also contribute to its popularity.

Encanto was co-directed by Bush and Byron Howard, with a screenplay by Bush and Charise Castro Smith. Lin-Manuel Miranda composed some of the soundtracks for the movie’s most well-known scenes. Disney+ is the only place to stream Encanto.
