On Netflix, the ship left port in the year 1899. More than a month after its debut on Nov. 17, the mystery-thriller series, which starred Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, and Miguel Bernardeau, has been canceled by the streaming service, according to its creators.

“With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed,” co-showrunners Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar announced on Odar’s Instagram. “We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned.”

The statement went on to say, “Such is life. We are aware that millions of fans would be disappointed by this. But we want to express our sincere gratitude for your participation in this fantastic trip. I adore you. Never overlook.”

Fans and the show’s cast have shared their sorrow about the unresolved finale in the comments.

The actor who played Krester in the episode, Lucas Lynggaard Tonnesen, said, “We’ll cross paths once more in a different simulation. To the moon and back, I love you.”

One supporter continued to criticize Netflix’s most recent action, adding, “It’s not their first odd choice, though. So sad. I hope another platform picks up your show and gives you a chance to wrap up your tale.”
