Paul Dooley, Molly Ringwald’s on-screen father, modified a pervy and incestuous statement from the original version of “Sixteen Candles.”
In his autobiography, “Movie Dad: Finding Myself and My Family, On Screen and Off,” Dooley reveals that he waited to shoot his significant on-screen moment with Ringwald, who was just 15 at the time.
The character actor, 94, writes that near the conclusion of their conversation, “the screenplay had the dad offering a nice slap on his daughter’s rear while adding, ‘Where the Hell are your panties?'”
Not only did Dooley find the line offensive, but so did Ringwald’s mother in real life.
“A behind-the-back pat? It’s more like copping a feel if you can spot missing poop, he writes.
Dooley created a new version after the actress’ mother inquired about options.
He writes that although the father’s remark was innocent, it was also loaded given that the audience is aware that Ringwald’s character, Sam Baker, gave a boy her underwear. “I would have the dad say, ‘When you finally meet your Mr. Right, make sure he knows you wear the pants in the family,'” he adds.
Dooley recollects that “Molly’s mum adored it.” “We showed it to John Hughes, who also liked it. That became the scene’s conclusion.
The now-54-year-old Ringwald has also publicly expressed her displeasure with a few of the moments in the iconic 1984 teen film.
The star of “Breakfast Club” explained to NPR in 2018 that she had a different perspective on “Sixteen Candles” as an adult, adding, “There were portions of the movie that upset me then. Even though everyone likes to claim that I had John Hughes’ ear and that he paid close attention to me in many ways, I wasn’t the director.
“Times were different, and what was acceptable then is obviously not acceptable now, nor should it have been then, but that’s sort of the way that it was,” continued Ringwald.
Dooley reveals in his memoir, which was published on December 15, that he initially declined the invitation to appear in “Sixteen Candles” because his agent thought the part was too minor following his career-launching performance in “Breaking Away.”
However, playing Jim Baker ended up being profitable.
Dooley claims that despite having played dad to numerous performers over the years, including Toni Collette (“Clockwatchers”), Julia Roberts (“Runaway Bride”), Philip Seymour Hoffman (“My Boyfriend’s Back”), and Helen Hunt (“Mad About You”), most people are familiar with him from “Sixteen Candles.”
