The Independent claimed that the popular instant messaging programme WhatsApp will, as it does every year, stop providing its messaging services for specific smartphones, leaving many users without the software in just one day.

The messaging app, which is owned by Meta, keeps receiving updates, but after December 31 certain users’ cellphones with older operating systems may stop working.

The following cellphones’ services will be discontinued by the company because they use out-of-date operating systems and cannot receive future updates for the improved messaging app.

Prior to the app ceasing to function on users’ phones, a warning message will be displayed.

According to a statement released by WhatsApp, “Devices and software change often, so we routinely assess what operating systems we support and make upgrades.”

The most recent security updates may not be installed on some devices, or they may not have the features needed to run WhatsApp. Like other technology firms, we evaluate which hardware and software are the oldest and have the fewest users each year to determine what to stop maintaining.

On an iPhone, click “software update” under “general” options if you wish to update your operating system.
