Mortal Shell is now available for free on the Epic Games Store. Epic Games Store is continuing its rollout of free video games for each and every day of the holidays.

Mortal Shell, developed by Cold Symmetry and released in 2020 on PC and console platforms, is a fantasy adventure that takes great pride in its incredibly challenging, melee-focused combat. Inspired by the popular Dark Souls series, the development team set out to create a similarly toned adventure where every single swing of the blade mattered, where life and death depended on one wrong (or right) decision in the heat of battle, and where quick adaptation to each enemy is the key to victory.

In Mortal Shell, players can possess the deceased’s bodies (or “mortal shells”), gaining access to their skills, weapons, and abilities. As a result, the game’s combat evolves organically as the player moves from body to body, gaining new talents on the fly and adapting to the reconfiguration of their attacking and defensive movements. Mortal Shell gained praise for its clever combat and fascinating challenge upon its initial release, with many remarking that its unashamed love of FromSoftware products was easily apparent, with some reviewers remarking that it felt like playing Dark Souls for the first time all over again.
