  • Jaffna Kings clinched victory over Colombo Stars in the summit clash.
  • Wasim Akram and Jayasuriya associated with LPL as brand ambassadors.
  • Carlos Brathwaite was the highest wicket taker in the competition.

The Lanka Premier League 2022 came to a thrilling conclusion on December 23 with 22000 people supporting their favourite players.

After edging Colombo Stars by two wickets in the championship game at the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, the Jaffna Kings won their third straight championship.

After a devastating economic and political crisis in the country, the event not only provided outstanding on-field action but also put smiles on the faces of the Sri Lankan people. Cricket greats Wasim Akram and Sanath Jayasuriya, who served as brand ambassadors for LPL, also supported the league.

The IPG Group has made a significant contribution to developing Sri Lankan cricket talent at the grassroots level through the Lanka Premier League. By launching a comparable cricket league in Malaysia the following year, the IPG Group is building on the foundation set by the LPL and attempting to expand the popularity of cricket in that nation.

The main promoter of LPL and founder of IPG, Anil Mohan, remarked, “We are pleased with what we accomplished so quickly. It’s nice to see so many spectators filling the stadiums to watch the games. The competition has been a big success, and we intend to return the next year with just as much fervour and excitement.” Young domestic cricketers and overseas players both put on thrilling displays in the third iteration of the Lanka Premier League. The competition’s top wicket taker and West Indies all-arounder Carlos Brathwaite, who represented the Kandy Falcons team, received the Orange Cap. 18 wickets were taken in 8 innings by the right arm fast medium bowler at an average of 9.88. Nuwan Thushara of the Galle Gladiators, who got 14 wickets in 9 games, was just behind him.

While Jaffna Kings’ top-order hitter Avishka Fernando earned the Green Cap for scoring the most runs. The top-order hitter recorded a high score of 54 while scoring 339 runs in 10 games at an amazing average of 37.66. His teammate Sadeera Samarawickrama, who scored 294 runs in 9 innings at an average of 58.80 with a top score of 62, was just behind him (not out). As a result of his outstanding all-around performance, Sadeera was also named Player of the Tournament.

Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, a legbreak bowler for Jaffna Kings, won Emerging Player of the Tournament for his impressive performance and 13 wickets in 8 innings. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, an Afghan wicketkeeper batsman for the Jaffna Kings, was named the competition’s Innovative Player. He was also given a prize for hitting the most sixes (15) during the competition.

Meanwhile, Tournament Director, Samantha, said, “The fans have loved every minute of the tournament. The league has seen some exciting young players showcasing their skill on a global stage and I wish them all the best for their future. It has also helped in bringing joy and happiness among the people of this country as it has united the country after a turbulent period of time.”
