Rita  Wilson ponders happiness.

“It’s seeing your family do what they love and — oops! Husband! “She pauses to greet husband Tom Hanks.

The 66-year-old actress thinks in a quiet area. “Happiness is thankfulness,” she says. “Gratitude is essential to happiness.” Wilson, 66, is thankful for his 50-year marriage and work.

“Every morning, I thank God. I’m here “saying, “I hope to create for many more years.”

Rita Wilson began acting at 16 in The Brady Bunch. After Three’s Company and Bosom Buddies, where she met Hanks, 66, she appeared in Sleepless in Seattle and That Thing You Do! Wilson put her career on hold to raise Chet, 32, and Truman, 27. She’s also stepmom to Colin, 45, and Elizabeth, 40.

“I slowed down my work so I could be there when kids got home, drive carpool, etc.,” she explains. “We travelled with Tom, who worked a lot. My kids would have suffered if we were both working. Slowing my career is a choice, not a sacrifice.”

Wilson claims she was happy for Hanks as his career grew.

“We’ve always supported each other,” she says. “Back when I did press junkets, interviewers would comment, “It must be so hard to be with someone so famous.” Why would they say that? Then I realized the question was about them and how they’d feel, not me.”

“If someone is glad for your success and you’re happy for theirs, it’s not an issue,” she says. “You know schadenfreude, when you enjoy someone’s misfortune? freudenfreude means being delighted for someone else’s success. I am freudenfreude. Another’s achievement doesn’t affect mine.”

Wilson grew up in Hollywood and “didn’t know you could be a bigger star.” “Working satisfied me,” she says. “I’ve only worked as a concert ticket taker and in retail during high school. So, I always viewed show business as something I loved doing.”

Rita Wilson argues “parenting never stops,” it only changes. Wilson maintains she had nothing to do with Truman’s casting in the upcoming film she co-produced, A Man Called Otto.

“A Man Called Otto director Marc Forster suggested meeting with Truman,” she says. “”He’s not an actor,” I said. He wants to be a filmmaker. He’s a Stanford math major with a unique brain. Marc persisted and asked, “Why don’t I meet with him?””

“I didn’t want to affect that process,” she says. “It’s a director’s decision, and I didn’t want to make my son feel pressured. I’m proud of him for staying out of it. “Wilson has focused on producing, performing, and songwriting since My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Mamma Mia!

Wilson has formed her own production firm, Artistic Films. Songwriting gives me artistic fulfilment. Wilson debuted with AM/FM a decade ago. Bruce Springsteen motivated her to start songwriting.

“I came late to music, so I doubted myself since others had more experience,” she adds. “I questioned Bruce, a family friend, why I should start writing now when he’d been doing it his whole life. Because, Reets, creativity is timeless.” “It’s really accurate,” she says. “Nobody says, “If you weren’t successful in your 20s, there’s no room for you now.” I wasn’t trying to be a pop star. I was grateful to learn and develop the craft.”

Wilson’s latest single, “Til You’re Home,” is a duet with Colombian artist Sebastián Yatra for A Man Called Otto. m”Everyone desires a home or location where you feel most themselves,” she adds of the Oscar-nominated track.

“Home is where the family is,” adds Wilson. “Because of our employment, I’ve always said this. Family is my refuge.” A Man Called Otto opens Dec. 30, then everywhere Jan. 13.
