The Crown actor Stephen Greif dies at 78

Stephen Greif, who was in Blake’s 7 and The Crown, has died at the age of 78, according to his representatives.

The actor had a long career on stage and on TV. He was in shows like Doctors, Coronation Street, and EastEnders, among others.

On Monday, Michelle Braidman Associates put a statement about his death on their website.

“With great sadness we announce the death of our wonderful client Stephen Greif,” the statement read.

“His extensive career included numerous roles on screen and stage, including at the National Theatre, RSC and in the West End.

“We will miss him dearly and our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Greif was born in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire. He went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and got his degree there. After that, he joined the National Theatre Company at the Old Vic and Southbank.

After starring in many plays on stage in the 1960s and early 1970s, he moved to movies and got the part of Travis, the space commander, in Blake’s 7.

Greif, Gareth Thomas, Paul Darrow, Michael Keating, and Sally Knyvette were all on the show from 1978 to 1981.

Greif also played Harry Fenning in three seasons of Citizen Smith, Signor Donato in Casanova, and Commander John Shepherd in Shoot On Sight.

In the 2020 season four of The Crown, he also played Speaker of the House Sir Bernard Weatherill.
