RRR beats the 24-year-old record of Rajinikanth starrer Muthu. Over the weekend, SS Rajamouli’s RRR surpassed Muthu to claim the top spot. Muthu’s earnings of 400 million have been surpassed by RRR’s 403,406,680 ($2.87 million) as of Sunday.
The $400 million gross amount for Muthu is an estimate rather than an accurate one. It’s likely that Muthu’s actual box office receipts are a little bit more or lower than this conventional estimate, making it feasible that “RRR” does not currently hold the record.
RRR, which was released in October, was the largest opening weekend for an Indian movie with a 35 million dollar opening weekend gross. Since then, the movie has performed consistently, and on Sunday, it passed the 400 million dollar barrier. Currently in its eighth week, the movie is doing well financially, with the eighth weekend only marginally underperforming the initial weekend two months ago. As movies have a longer shelf life in Japan, “RRR” could surpass the 500 million dollar threshold.
Following are RRR’s Japanese box office totals:
Week 0 – ¥9,139,510
Week 1 – ¥72,210,790
Week 2 – ¥72,222,720 (+0.01%)
Week 3 – ¥65,368,750 (-9.49%)
Week 4 – ¥44,959,990 (-31.22%)
Week 5 – ¥49,961,670 (+11.12%)
Week 6 – ¥47,996,100 (-3.94%)
Week 7 – ¥27,529,470 (-42.64%)
8th Weekend – ¥14,017,680 (-4.47%)
Total – ¥403,406,680
Since the international box office is still only available to diaspora viewers who reside in other countries—and there aren’t many of them in Japan—Japan is not a traditional market for Indian cinema. But with the “Baahubali” franchise, SS Rajamouli has established a place in Japan, and “RRR” has elevated this success to a new level. While “RRRperformance “‘s in Japan didn’t have as big of a breakthrough as “Dangal” did in China, it still has the potential to open doors for more Indian movies in the region.
