PTI MNAs to appear before NA Speaker next week

  • PTI MNAs will appear before Speaker National Assembly
  • They will demand the acceptance of their resignations
  • PTI MNAs had submitted mass resignations in April this year

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNAs has decided to appear before the Speaker National Assembly to demand the acceptance of their resignations, BOL News reported.

Around 123 PTI MNAs had submitted resignations en masse when Imran Khan was ousted as prime minister in April this year. However, the resignations have not yet been accepted despite the lapse of several months and repeated requests from the party leadership to accept them.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan has decided that all MNAs will appear before the Speaker National Assembly Raja Pervaiz Ashraf next week and demand the acceptance of their resignations.

Sources revealed that the party chief has ordered all MNAs to reach Islamabad by Monday. The parliamentarians will appear before the Speaker on Tuesday or Wednesday in Parliament House.

If a session is not being held, all members will go to the Speaker’s chamber and ask him to accept their resignations immediately. If the speaker demands, the MNAs will submit their resignations again in writing. Sources added that MNAs will be ready to resign in the same way as the speaker demands.

It must be mentioned that National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has decided to once gain summon PTI lawmakers for the verification of their resignations,

In a letter issued by the National Assembly Secretariat in response to PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the speaker referred to the Islamabad High Court’s (IHC) decision that the speaker has to be satisfied regarding “genuineness and voluntary character of the resignation” before accepting them.

NA Speaker recalled that the PTI MNAs were given time from June 6 to 10 to confirm the genuineness of their resignation in person but none of them came for verification of their resignations.

The speaker once again invites these MNAs to appear one by one for verification of their resignations. He reiterated that the resignations would not be accepted unless he was assured that the mass resignation did not take place under pressure.

Former NA deputy speaker Qasim Suri had accepted the resignations of 123 PTI MNAs before he stepped down. However, the incumbent speaker decided to verify the resignations and only accepted the resignations of 11 lawmakers.

The PTI challenged the move in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on August 1. The court dismissed the petition and declared that the acceptance of resignations by the then-deputy speaker was unconstitutional. The party moved the Supreme Court and requested it to set aside the IHC order but the decision is still pending.
