Mickey Arthur is a strong candidate to be the head coach of the Pakistan men’s team, according to sources. Arthur has been in charge of the Pakistan team since 2016. Before that, he was in charge for three years.
After the team finished fifth at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019, the PCB decided not to renew the contracts of Arthur and his support staff.
During Arthur’s time with the Pakistan team, there were both highs and lows. Pakistan won the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy in England and moved to the top of the ICC T20I Team Rankings while he was their coach.
The head of cricket for the English county team Derbyshire, Mickey Arthur, signed a contract with the team until the end of the 2025 season back in December. The former head coach of Australia, South Africa, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka signed a two-year deal with the club in November 2021.
Najam Sethi, who is the head of the PCB Management Committee, has hinted in the past that the national team might hire foreign coaches in the future.
Sources say that the rest of the committee members also want a foreign coach for the team led by Babar Azam.
“We will decide about Saqlain Mushtaq and Mohammad Yousuf in an internal meeting tomorrow,” Sethi told the media in Lahore on Friday.
“Our local superstars and former players will be employed; we will look after them and find them jobs but they won’t be coaching the team.
“When I was in power, we had Mickey Arthur and results were evident. We were world number one in both ODI and Test cricket and we won the Champions Trophy as well.”
Saqlain Mushtaq leads the Pakistan men’s cricket team’s coaching staff; Mohammad Yousuf is the batting coach. Shaun Tait is the team’s bowling coach.
Mushtaq and Tait’s contract ends in February 2023, so the New Zealand series will be their last job together.
Yousuf was appointed as batting coach on a series-by-series basis by the Ramiz Raja administration. He’s the batting coach of the National High-Performance Center (NHPC) in Lahore.
