Adam Zampa wants third umpire in charge of waist-high full tosses

  • Asif Ali almost pulled off a miracle victory for Hobart Hurricanes.
  • Hayden Kerr’s final six came from a high full toss, replays showed.
  • The on-field decision holds unless a wicket is taken by the ball.

Adam Zampa wants the third umpire to be in charge of all waist-high full tosses, not just the ones that take wickets.

Zampa was commenting for local TV channel on Thursday when Asif Ali almost pulled off a miracle victory for the Hobart Hurricanes. Ali hit three sixes and a four when Hurricanes needed 45 off 10 balls, reducing the target to 23 off the final ball.

Replays indicated that the final six hit by Hayden Kerr came off a high full toss that was just above waist height in the penultimate over. However, under the existing protocols, the on-field decision holds unless a wicket is taken by the ball.

Although Ali was dismissed in the final over, the Hurricanes closed to within six runs of victory, and a no-ball call and ensuing free hit could have resulted in an unlikely comeback.

“You’ve got the technology…
Try it out; it won’t hurt a bit “After watching the video, Zampa added. “It’s a strikeout…
Stop making excuses and start using the technology already at your disposal.

“It might have helped a little if that no-ball had counted. Should we even be utilizing such innovations? It’s a quick process that only requires two seconds.

“If that was hit and caught, they would have checked it. So I don’t see the difference. Next ball goes for six, it makes just as much difference as a wicket.”
