‘The Seven Faces of Jane’ is a unique movie, cinema is an expressive medium, but there hasn’t been a movie quite like that.
It is a risky, exquisite artistic project in which eight different directors explore the journey of our main character, a wanderer who becomes distorted as a result of weird, drastically altering occurrences. Because her life has changed so much, Jane’s story is presented from the perspectives of many different storytellers, each of whom has a different idea of what she could or could become. This first trailer demonstrates how it produces a breathtaking experience.
Our titular protagonist, played by Gillian Jacobs, who also directs a scene, discovers herself driving away from the uninteresting existence she once had into an exhilarating and life-changing voyage on the road.
Each director “just had to follow by a few restrictions, meaning audiences get to watch Jane interpreted in eight different cinematic languages, her existence mediated by eight different brains,” according to the synopsis for the movie.
Each director adopts a style and tone that is completely unique from the other, as can be seen in this trailer. While this may easily lead to disaster, that is both the beauty and peril of producing a movie like this.
An exquisite corpse is a technique for collectively producing art that was created by the French Surrealists. Each person puts together a different random piece of the puzzle to form the whole.
Cinema is such a visceral and collaborative art form that it undoubtedly lends itself to such a disparate-yet-connecting vision, even if it is generally used in other art forms, such as writing.
The Seven Faces of Jane should ideally turn out to be a gripping, intriguing, and unique movie, especially in relation to the development of our main character, under the assured, vulnerable direction of Jacobs, who has demonstrated her versatility across a number of movies.
In addition to Jacobs directing a portion of this anthological film, The Seven Faces of Jane will also have contributions from Gia Coppola, Xan Cassavetes, Boma Iluma, Ryan Heffington, Julian J. Heffington, Ken Jeong, and Alex Takacs.
Roman Coppola, who didn’t direct any scenes but instead oversaw this visual game of pass the baton, also serves as the film’s producer.
It’s a pleasant reunion for Jacobs and Joel McHale and a daring cinematic endeavour in and of itself, at least until the much awaited Community movie in 2023. And in a Jeong-directed segment no less!
On January 13th, Gravitas Ventures will present The Seven Faces of Jane in a few theatres and on VOD.
