- James Gunn and Peter Safran are the new heads of DC Comics Studios.
- The past few months have been an emotional rollercoaster for DC fans.
- James Gunn is developing a Superman movie.
James Gunn and Peter Safran as the leaders of DC Studios, Black Adam’s poor box office performance, the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3, and Henry Cavill’s announcement that he won’t be playing Superman again, all these happened in year 2022. The past few months have been an emotional rollercoaster for DC fans.
As a result, many fans have expressed their sentiments on social media, and as you can expect, rage and vitriol have rapidly followed. Particularly toward Gunn and Safran. Now that the keyboard warriors have taken control of DC Studios in late October, Gunn has retaliated against all of them.
Gunn wrote: “One of the things Peter & I were aware of when we took the job as heads of DC Studios was a certain minority of people online that could be, well, uproarious & unkind, to say the least.”
Gunn shared this on both Twitter and Instagram. “Our choices for the DCU are based on what we believe is best for the plot & best for the DC characters who have been around for almost 85 years,” the Suicide Squad director would go on to declare.
These decisions are made with sincerity, integrity, and always with the story in mind, thus they may or may not be excellent. He will conclude by denouncing the hatred in his post:
“No one loves to be harassed or called names – but, to be frank, we’ve been through significantly worse. Disrespectful outcry will never, ever affect our actions. We were aware there would be a period of turbulence when we took this gig, & we knew we would sometimes have to make difficult & not-so-obvious choices, especially in the wake of the fractious nature of what came before us. But this means little to us in comparison to our jobs as artists & custodians in helping to create a wide & wonderful future for DC.”
Sadly, the DC predicament has served as yet another shining example of the worst that toxic fandom has to offer when it was revealed that Cavill wouldn’t be playing Superman again.
It’s still a problem that’s becoming worse in the entertainment business, but to Gunn’s credit, he keeps handling DC fandom like a pro. The daunting task of reversing the declining trend of the DC Universe was assigned to Gunn and Safran.
Whatever your opinion of the so-called “Snyderverse,” it was a film series with a low rate of success. A lot of the DC movies in the current continuity, except from Wonder Woman and Aquaman, didn’t do well at the box office.
The fact that Warner Bros’ prior leadership weakened the DC brand with publicity gimmicks like the hybrid release of Wonder Woman 1984 amid the epidemic didn’t help.
After seeing how the previous DC cinematic universe performed, Gunn decided to start again. For almost a decade, Cavill’s Superman has been the centre of attention for DC fans, yet the tale Gunn wants to tell with this legendary figure doesn’t work with that interpretation of the character.
Currently, Gunn is developing a Superman movie that will depict the hero in his formative years. As fans, it’s simple to transform our affection for a character into a sense of false ownership and entitlement, which frequently results in disappointment. The decision to replace Cavill was slammed with hatred online.
It is hard to evaluate Gunn and Safran’s DC Universe before allowing their filmic universe to develop. Given that Gunn is the director of The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy, two of the greatest superhero films ever made, they should unquestionably be given the benefit of the doubt.
In spite of the seeming overwhelming criticism, some fans have found it refreshing to see a creator like Gunn be so open and honest during this uncertain time for DC.
Regardless of anyone’s dissatisfaction with his decisions, no one has the right to post cruel comments without cause. No one enjoys being harassed, as Gunn noted in his post.
Even if you disagree with Gunn’s choices up to this point, try to picture the lose-lose scenario he’s currently in by putting yourself in his shoes for a moment.
Toxic fandom has no place in this reality, and as Gunn previously mentioned, it won’t affect his judgement. Because of this, it’s best to be respectful and patient.
