US intends to supply Ukraine electronic equipment that may transform unguided aerial ordnance into “smart bombs,” which provide extremely precise targeting, according to some US officials.
The decision to send the kits to Ukraine, which was first reported by the Washington Post, is anticipated to be included in the upcoming package of security help for that country as soon as this week, according to the sources.
The guidance tail kits can be attached to bombs of various sizes and weights to produce what the Pentagon refers to as a Joint Direct Attack Munition, or JDAM.
The US military has employed this technology to strike targets with a high degree of accuracy, using 500-pound to larger 2,000-pound bombs.
Officials did not specify how many of these kits will be distributed or what kind of JDAM would be included.
The precise bombs could aid Ukraine in attacking established Russian defensive lines or other big targets. However, they are typically dropped from aerial bombers or fighter jets.
Similar to how they did earlier this year with HARM anti-radiation missiles developed in the US, the Ukrainian Air Force would need to figure out a way to target and launch JDAMs from their outdated Soviet-era aircraft.
According to the US Air Force, the kits give unguided bombs a range of roughly 15 miles, preventing Ukraine from striking well into Russian territory.
