Musk’s weekend was rough.

He lost a Twitter poll about staying CEO. Tesla shareholders disapproved. He alienated some of his biggest fans.

Even during his challenging beginnings as a firm owner, some occurrences stood out.

Paul Graham, the founder of startup incubator Y Combinator, said of Elon Musk, “I still think he’s clever.” “He could still save it. He’s someone you shouldn’t dismiss. He should. I’d want to use Twitter again.”

Graham was one of the most prominent Musk supporters to oppose Twitter’s restriction on promoting accounts on other services. Graham has more than 1.6 million Twitter followers.

Graham tweeted that his Mastodon profile was on his personal website. His account was suspended and restored.
Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian tweeted, “This is going to get really, really interesting.”

Twitter didn’t immediately comment.

Musk had already lost some support after barring some high-profile journalists last week sparked outrage from conservatives. Many celebrities have quit Twitter.

Some who had welcomed Musk or thought he could improve Twitter jumped on his prohibition on link sharing and the following poll.

Jimmy Donaldson, known as MrBeast on YouTube, had openly talked with Musk about making the platform a destination for creators.

Even Donaldson suggested Musk resign Sunday night. Donaldson responded to Musk’s Twitter poll about resigning with a vomit emoji and a screenshot of Twitter’s link-banning rule, which it has now overturned.

Donaldson didn’t comment immediately.

Musk reinstated a handful of banned journalists Saturday after a Twitter poll. Twitter reversed its ban on promoting Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel, Nostr, and Post accounts after outrage.

Damage seemed done. Box CEO Aaron Levie termed the link restriction “sad”

If users don’t know if a policy change will harm their reach and viewership, they won’t use the service at scale, Levie tweeted to Musk. It’s a long-term risk!

Musk tweeted an apology Sunday afternoon. He wrote, “Major policy changes will be voted on.” Sorry. “Never again.”

After all that, some people are cautious of Twitter. The weekend’s revelations are the latest in a series of problems for Musk.

On Oct. 27, Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion. He lay off workers. He’s alienated, marginalized users and free speech absolutists. As Twitter circumstances deteriorated, people sought alternatives.

Some thought they could do better.

Is Twitter worth running? Snoop Dogg tweeted Sunday. Monday afternoon, most said yes.

Musk’s Twitter account remained silent Monday following a busy weekend. Sunday night, he responded to Lex Fridman, a technologist, and podcaster who offered to be CEO for free.

Musk warned, “You gotta like pain.” Twitter is insolvent and you must invest your life’s money to use it. Still interested?
