Duke and Duchess of Sussex could have left their jobs as front-line royals without having to leave the United Kingdom, Experts said.
Experts believe that if the monarchy had been reduced in size, Harry and Meghan’s desire for independence from the Royal Family could have come true.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are thought to have permanently severed ties with the family following the release of their explosive Netflix documentary.
Among the claims levelled in the six-part series was a spat between Harry and his brother William when they were discussing Megxit.
However, the King favours a slimmed-down monarchy in line with others in Europe, with fewer members of the front line royals.
According to Professor Robert Hazell of University College London, if this had happened, Harry and his wife could have “escaped the gilded cage” without the falling out.
Writing with colleague Dr Bob Morris, he said: “They also lack free choice of job; freedom to marry whom they like; freedom of speech; freedom of religion; and freedom to travel.
“In all European monarchies the heir and others close in the line of succession cannot choose a profession or pursue a business career.
“The harsh reality is that younger sons are spares who are ultimately dispensable from a hereditary monarchy: it is only those in direct line of succession who count.”
