- The House select committee investigating the attack on the US Capitol.
- The panel to send at least three criminal referrals to Justice Department.
- The White House is unlikely to comment on any such referrals or actions.
The House select committee investigating the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, gives its final report to the public this week – holding a final public meeting on Monday and announcing expected criminal referrals to the Justice Department, followed by the release of its full report on Wednesday – the White House is expected to stay quiet and not comment on any recommendations that the panel may make to the Justice Department.
Top White House officials have worked hard for most of the year to avoid saying anything specific about the work of the panel. There was one goal that had to be done as soon as possible: don’t do anything that might make it look like the White House was trying to influence the DOJ.
And these efforts are likely to become even more important for the Biden White House after the committee sends at least three criminal charges against former President Donald Trump to the DOJ, as a source familiar with the situation said the committee was expected to do this week.
Before the committee’s last meeting on Monday, a White House official told Media that the White House would continue to stay out of any referrals or actions that the committee might take. Another official said that this would be in line with the White House’s efforts this year to avoid “running pundit” on the work of the panel.
But officials also said that President Biden has been clear in public about the importance of what happened on January 6, 2021, the importance of the committee’s work, and how he feels about the uprising from last year and the threats to the democratic systems of the country.
In fact, Biden made this a big part of his political message before the midterm elections. Some of his fellow Democrats criticised him for this choice, saying he should have focused more on the economy, but the White House felt vindicated when Democrats did much better than expected.
And when Biden did talk about the committee directly, he made it clear that he thinks the members are doing important work for writing history.
