- Ukraine has asked the US to send it the Patriot missile defense system.
- Russia has been attacking Ukraine and destroying infrastructure.
- Officials say it will help NATO countries in Europe keep their airspace safe.
The country would be better able to defend itself from drone and missile attacks by Russian forces if it had fighter planes and Patriot missile defense systems, said a spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force.
Yurii Ihnat said on Ukrainian TV on Monday, after a series of drone attacks on the country, that “F-15 and F-16 aircraft could effectively fight the threats we face today, like missile attacks and Shahids attacks” (Iranian-made drones used by Russian forces).
Last week, the news said that the US was finishing up plans to send Ukraine the Patriot missile defence system.
Ukraine has been asking the US to send the Patriot, which is the US’s most advanced ground-based air defence system and is very good at stopping ballistic and cruise missiles. This is because Russia has been attacking Ukraine and destroying important infrastructure all over the country.
It would be the best long-range defensive weapons system that could be sent to Ukraine, and officials say it will help NATO countries in eastern Europe keep their airspace safe.
