James McAvoy and Ruth Wilson discussed their favorite aspects of spending time together in Season 3 in this interview with news. They also discussed learning to let fate take its course, why Wilson loves Mrs. Coulter, whether they think their characters receive a heroic moment this season, and what it was like to work with their daemon puppet and its puppeteer.

RUTH WILSON: “It excelled. Asriel has obviously been brought up a lot by Mrs. Coulter. He only appeared in one scene at the close of the first season, so we have been anticipating seeing him again. The characters and the audience both had high expectations. There was a sense of anticipation surrounding the reunion and the question, “Will it be the same as before?”

“This time, the fact that it wasn’t as excellent as it had been was fantastic. There is a sense of loss for what it was and what it is no more, which is disheartening and frustrating. They have evolved. They are both distinct individuals. So, getting underneath that was extremely interesting, and it was interesting to see how we got to their final act of cooperating for the common good. These two had a major journey to take in Season 3, and that was extremely enjoyable to accomplish. Playing was very enjoyable”

JAMES McAVOY:  “It was challenging because you had to play in the present while attempting to hold on to all of history at the same time. When you have wonderful material, a fantastic actor, and you’re also pretty good, hopefully, that just adds more juice. It is simply more juice; it isn’t more difficult, confusing, or under strain. You get extra fuel. Actually, I felt that that applied to the majority of our scenes together. They experienced intense fueling and energizing. Even though there was a lot of information being carried that was not being expressed or even known by the audience, it was influencing how we interacted with one another. This person is attempting to destroy the skies. He’s attempting to bring about a revolution in the heavenly realm. However, despite his best efforts, he is unable to obtain the approval he seeks from this woman. He can’t get it no matter how kind, how terrible, how aggressive, how appeasing, or anything else he tries. Since she is the only thing he truly, truly, truly needs, it might be his undoing.”
