- Tom Glynn-Carney plays Aegon Targaryen in the House of Dragon prequel.
- He is familiar with his persona in the show
- The actor says he sees Aegon as a multilayered character with “pits of vulnerability”.
Tom Glynn-Carney from House of Dragon is familiar with his persona. Aegon Targaryen is fully supportive of it and has a lot of King Joffrey enthusiasm.
Game of Thrones alumni Jack Gleeson joined Glynn-Carney on Dec. 11 at the Official Game of Thrones Convention, where the two monarchs discussed their respective dictatorial rulers of Westeros—with Glynn-Carney pointing out how they’re actually slightly different.
“It’s a compliment to me,” Glynn-Carney said of fans comparing to Aegon to Joffrey online, “if anything, that I’m doing my job, and it’s having the impact that is required.”
Viewers witnessed Aegon’s ascent to power throughout the first season of the Game of Thrones prequel thanks to the deeds of his cunning mother Queen Alicent (Olivia Cooke) and paternal grandpa Ser Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans). Aegon, however, doesn’t want to be king because he would rather be causing mayhem in King’s Landing. (Recall that he has already attacked royal servants and produced a number of idiots.)
Glynn-Carney compared the two young kings as being “tortured” with “deep, deep issues,” similar to Gleeson’s King Joffrey who also had a sadistic inclination and family members who were power-hungry.
“Which is a lot of fun to play as an actor,” he added. “But I also see [Aegon] as being incredibly complex. He’s not an out-and-out psychopath. I’m not saying Joffrey is, but I see a multilayered character that just has endless potential of pits of vulnerability and empathy and things that we don’t see that I think it’s important to have at least a flavor of, because it brings the humanity to him, and that’s what pulls people in two separate directions.”
