Melissa McCarthy has reportedly been hired to star in a Peacock movie with an unnamed festive theme. McCarthy’s next projects include one in a holiday film.
The film is billed as a fairy-tale comedy with a New York setting about a man who works too much and wants to see his family before Christmas. He seeks the assistance of a mystical genie to accomplish this.
McCarthy’s role as the character has not yet been revealed. Her prior work includes The Starling (directed by Theodore Melfi) from 2021, Thunder Force (directed by her husband Ben Falcone), and Superintelligence (directed by Theodore Melfi) from 2020. (also directed by Falcone).
In the live-action remake of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, directed by Rob Marshall, McCarthy will also play Ursula, the villain Pat Carroll previously portrayed in the 1989 animated feature.
McCarthy has also been chosen for Jerry Seinfeld’s upcoming Netflix comedy Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story, which explores the history of the toaster pastry.
Sam Boyd will helm the picture. Boyd previously wrote and directed the 2018 film In a Relationship. Additionally, he was the creator of the Love Life romantic comedy series, which aired on HBO Max in 2020 and 21 and featured Anna Kendrick, Zo Chao, and Sasha Compère.
The sitcom was reportedly cancelled earlier this week and will no longer be available on streaming services, according to source.
Richard Curtis will pen the screenplay for the next motion picture. Previous screenplays by Curtis include the Danny Boyle-directed 2019 film Yesterday, Stephen Daldry-directed 2014 film Trash, Curtis-directed 2013 film About Time, and the beloved Christmas film Love, Actually.
Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title will produce the movie. Through her production company, Linden Productions, Riva Marker will also produce.
Erik Baiers, who is the EVP of production development, and Christine Sun, who is the director of development, will manage the production of the movie, which will be made by Universal. Alexandra Loewy of Working Title will also direct the picture.
There is no information on a possible release date for the movie on Peacock. One of McCarthy’s most recent movies, The Starling, is currently streaming on Netflix and allows viewers to view some of her earlier work.
