Kirby Howell talks about the deleted scene in “The Sound of Her Wings”

Kirby Howell-Baptiste, the star of The Sandman, traveled to Brazil’s CCXP at the beginning of this month to participate in a panel for the fantasy series. The co-star who plays Lucienne in the show, Vivienne Acheampong, and the actor sat down to speak with the channel about the show and, more particularly, about the deleted scene that was shown at the panel. The moment is from the “The Sound of Her Wings” episode, although the video hasn’t been posted online yet.

Howell-Baptiste said in the interview that she had forgotten about the scene because it had been shot so long ago. Since many scenes don’t make it to the final episodes, it may be difficult to keep track of what made it to Netflix and what was left on the editing room floor. The moment has already been discussed in our coverage of CCXP, but now Howell-Baptiste herself has detailed it to Collider and shared her thoughts on it:

“So the scene that was shown here [at CCXP] that was deleted, which by the way, I had kind of forgotten about it because it was such a long time ago. So, it was really nice for me to see it, and it felt brand new again. But it was a scene where it’s a continuation of myself and Dream [Tom Sturridge] walking and talking through London, and he’s going about… He’s with me on a day of work. He’s like, bring-your-kid-to-work day. In that scene what we talk about is Death goes through her job, and she expects, well she does obviously get resistance and so what she talks about is, she decided to experience what she does. So, she lived for a day and then met herself. She was taking it, she had her amount of time. And I think that scene or that part that we’ve taken from the comic is so key to who Death is, and the reason why she’s so compassionate is that she understands because she went through it. So she understands that no one is ready at the end because she herself being Death and knowing what was going to happen, still didn’t feel ready to go.”

The Death-themed episode of Sandman is a potent exercise in self-reflection and accepting the finite nature of our existence on Earth. The deleted scene showed that Death walked in a person’s shoes to experience what it was like to die. Howell-Baptiste mentioned on the panel that she had to tackle the topic of death, which is something that we all try to avoid and frequently perceive as taboo. It becomes sad and beautiful at the same time when the Sandman persona subverts that and brings this discussion to the forefront. In both the series and the graphic books by author Neil Gaiman, Death is a beloved figure.

The Sandman has already received a Season 2 Netflix renewal. Gaiman himself has declared that Delirium, yet another beloved character, will be joining the cast for the upcoming episodes. Which storylines from the renowned comic novels will be adapted in the next episodes are still unknown.

All of Season 1 of The Sandman’s episodes are currently available on Netflix to stream. Watch our Comic-Con interview with Gaiman and members of the characters below for additional information on The Sandman.
