Senate passes major military policy bill that lifts Covid vaccine mandate for service members and authorizes $858 billion in defense expenditures.
The National Defense Authorization Act passed the Senate 83-11. 5 Republicans and 6 Democrats opposed it.
It passed 350-80 last week.
Now, President Joe Biden must sign the bill.
The bill would fund Taiwan and Ukraine and raise army pay by 4.6%. It would eliminate the Republican-backed military vaccination mandate. Democratic leaders authorized new Covid wording to assure legislative passage.
A GOP-backed amendment to abolish the immunization mandate immediately instead of waiting weeks failed to get 60 Senate votes.
Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., submitted an amendment to change the authorization process for energy and infrastructure projects. It lacked 60 votes.
