The perpetrator of the earlier this year onstage assault on comedian Dave Chappelle has been given a nine-month prison sentence.
In May, while appearing in a Netflix special at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Chappelle was tackled in front of a dumbfounded audience.
According to police, the assailant, 24-year-old Isaiah Lee, also had a knife disguised inside a fake gun.
After entering a no guilty plea to the misdemeanor charges against him, Lee was given a sentence of 270 days in jail on Wednesday.
He was seen charging into Chappelle during his performance at the Netflix is a Joke comedy festival, according to videos posted on social media.
Following the event, Chappelle was joined on stage by fellow comic Chris Rock and actor/singer Jamie Foxx to demonstrate their support for him.
Chappelle wasn’t hurt, but Lee had to go to the hospital for treatment. Lee’s face appears red and damaged in pictures taken of him shortly after his detention. He was reportedly punched and kicked by security personnel at the time of the event, according to US media.
Late in 2021, when Dave Chappelle’s Netflix special was criticised for allegedly being transphobic. A live performance in Minneapolis was cancelled hours before it was scheduled to start because of the about 100 protesters who gathered outside the Netflix offices to oppose the show’s airing.
Lee revealed that he is bisexual and was angered by Chappelle’s remarks regarding the LGBTQ community in a post-attack interview with the New York Post.
