Family verified Grant Wahl died of an aortic aneurysm in Qatar. Céline Gounder, Wahl’s wife, said it “developed slowly, undetected.”

Wahl wrote that Grant died of an undiagnosed ascending aortic aneurysm. “He may have had chest pain first. CPR or shocks were useless.” “COVID didn’t kill him. He died without vaccines. Death wasn’t suspicious.”

Wahl, 48, collapsed during Argentina vs. Netherlands. Other journalists inquired why there wasn’t a defibrillator as paramedics gave Wahl CPR.

Eric said Grant “died” on Friday. Grant investigated migrant deaths at the FIFA World Cup and was detained for wearing a rainbow jersey.

“Even when the U.S. went out, my body told me, “Man, you’re not sleeping enough.” It was awful.” Even though he felt better, he had to cancel everything for Thursday.

After his death, U.S. Soccer sent out a tweet: “The death of Grant Wahl has been very sad for U.S. Soccer. Fans of soccer and good journalism knew they could count on Grant for smart and interesting stories about the teams, players, coaches, and personalities in the game.”

Monday, Secretary Blinken said that Wahl had done a good job.

“The way Grant Wahl wrote about the game and its world was perfect. I’m sorry for his family’s loss, and I’m glad that our Embassy team and Qatari partners helped them.”

For 24 years, Sports Illustrated said good things about Wahl’s work.

The two co-chief editors, Ryan Hunt and Stephen Cannella, said: “We’re devastated by Grant’s death. No writer in the history of Sports Illustrated was more passionate about the sport he loved and the stories he wanted to tell. We are thinking about Celine’s family and fans. He will always be a part of the SI family.”
