The majority of Republicans and Republicans leaning toward Republicans would choose Florida’s governor to Donald Trump as their contender for president in 2024, according to a poll.
Conservative voters preferred Governor Ron DeSantis over the former president, who officially launched his fresh campaign last month, by a margin of 56% to 33%.
President Joe Biden scored better than Mr. Trump in the Suffolk University/USA Today survey, it was also discovered.
It comes after candidates endorsed by Trump in the midterm elections had a mixed bag of results.
“There’s a new Republican sheriff in town,” said David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center.
“DeSantis outpolls Trump not only among the general electorate, but also among these Republican-leaning voters who have been the former president’s base.
“Republicans and conservative independents increasingly want Trumpism without Trump.”
According to the national poll, Mr. DeSantis would defeat Mr. Biden in a hypothetical contest with 47% to 43% of the vote among all voters. There were 7% who were unsure.
The 44-year-old Mr. DeSantis was re-elected in November with the greatest margin of victory for a Florida governor in forty years, more than a million and a half votes.
In the days that followed, Mr. Trump retaliated against his future opponent and urged him not to seek the presidency.
“I think if he runs, he could hurt himself very badly,” he told Fox News.
Only 30% of respondents to the poll who were released on Tuesday approved of Mr. Trump, while 46% did.
Additionally, the poll revealed that more than 60% of people would prefer that neither Mr. Trump nor Mr. Biden run for office in 2024.
Between December 7 and December 11, 1,000 registered voters were surveyed by landline and cell phones.
