India claims that its military battled with Chinese troops in a disputed border region for the first time in more than a year.
Since at least 24 troops were killed in a violent conflict in 2020, the governments have been attempting to de-escalate tensions.
However, the Indian army said on Monday that there was a battle in the Tawang area of Arunachal Pradesh state on the easternmost tip of India last Friday.
A few soldiers suffered minor injuries on both sides.
China has not yet commented on the dispute. However, an Indian army source told Reuters that at least six Indian troops were hurt.
Both sides quickly withdrew from the area, according to the Indian army.
Immediate after, commanders from both sides met “to restore peace and serenity,” according to the report.
China and India share a contested 3,440km (2,100 mile) de facto boundary, known as the Line of Actual Control or LAC, that is poorly delineated. Because rivers, lakes, and snowcaps are present, the line might vary. The soldiers on each side, representing two of the largest armies in the world, face one other at numerous points.
Occasionally, tensions erupt into clashes. Since a significant battle in June 2020 in the Galwan Valley in the Ladakh region, which resulted in the deaths of at least 20 Indian soldiers and at least four Chinese soldiers, both sides have been attempting to de-escalate the situation.
This battle, fought with sticks and clubs instead of firearms, was the first fatal encounter between the two factions in the region in 45 years.
In January 2021, troops on both sides were injured in a rematch. It occurred at the border between China and the Indian state of Sikkim, which lies between Bhutan and Nepal.
In September, both countries agreed to remove their forces from a contested area along the rugged western Himalayan border, and both sides began military withdrawals.
