Ukraine: Russia launches drones at Odesa and Kyiv

  • Both sides of the war have hit the southern part of Ukraine. Russia fired drones at Odessa, and Kyiv fought back in Melitopol.
  • The Ukrainian army said that on Saturday, they shot down 10 drones, but another 5 hit power plants, leaving about 1.5 million people without electricity.
  • Moscow has been firing a lot of missiles and drones at the energy infrastructure in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian army said that on Saturday, they shot down 10 drones, but another 5 hit power plants, leaving about 1.5 million people without electricity.

Later, the Ukrainian mayor of Melitopol who was living outside of the city said that a strike had been done on the city, which was in Russian hands.

A Russian-appointed official there showed pictures of a big fire.

Ukrainian officials say that when Russia attacked the port city of Odessa with drones, it fired drones made in Iran at key infrastructure.

In his nightly video address, President Volodymyr Zelensky said, “The situation in the Odessa area is very bad.” “Since the hits were so bad, it will take more than time to get the power back on. It takes a few days, not hours.”

Since October, Moscow has been firing a lot of missiles and drones at the energy infrastructure in Ukraine.

Pro-Moscow officials in Melitopol said that a missile attack had killed two people and hurt ten others. However, the exiled mayor, Ivan Fedorov, said that dozens of “invaders” had been killed.

“Air defence systems destroyed two missiles, four reached their targets,” Yevgeny Balitsky, the Moscow-appointed governor of the occupied part of the Zaporizhzhia region, said on the Telegram messaging app.

He also said that the Ukrainian attack with Himars missiles had destroyed a “recreation centre” where people were having dinner.
