Shawnee Smith in talks to appear in the next instalment of the American horror film, with the Saw 10 plot already known, familiar faces from the franchise are reportedly returning. The film franchise has made an impression not only on the horror scene, but also on popular culture.
The new generation of horror has undoubtedly given us a fresh perspective on the genre, but the horror releases from the early 2000s are in a league of their own.
With titles like Dawn of the Dead, Hostel, Wolf Creek, Final Destination, and Wrong Turn, it’s safe to say that the ’00s took gore to new heights and redefined the genre. Of course, when it comes to bloody movies, Saw has to be almost everyone’s favourite.
More information has emerged, indicating that the upcoming Saw sequel will feature more than one familiar face.
Following the announcement that Tobin Bell would reprise his role as the infamous Jigsaw Killer in the tenth Saw film, the cast has grown to include Synnve Macody Lund, Steven Brand, and Michael Beach. According to Deadline, Smith is also considering a comeback.
However, neither Lionsgate nor Twisted Pictures have commented on Smith’s return in the tenth Saw film, which is still untitled.
Considering her role in the franchise and Bell’s return, Smith is most likely to return as a significant part of the next Saw film. Smith will almost certainly reprise her role as Amanda Young in some capacity—”perhaps via flashbacks, as in a couple of previous instalments,” according to Deadline.
It’s unclear how Smith’s character will be incorporated into Saw 10’s narrative, though the franchise has used flashbacks in the past to keep past characters involved, as with Bell’s character’s death.
Smith’s character, Amanda Young, has been through a lot in the three Saw films, and it hasn’t been for the better. Her character was a heroin addict who awoke with a reverse bear trap strapped to her skull.
She returned as John Kramer’s (Bell) apprentice after surviving the lethal game and has been an obsessed serial killer ever since, contrary to Kramer’s reason for setting up deadly traps: to determine if the victims are willing to live their lives to the fullest.
Kevin Greuter will return to direct the sequel as well. He previously directed Saw VI and Saw: The Final Chapter, as well as editing the first five films and Jigsaw in 2017.
There is currently no information available about Saw 10, including the roles that Lund, Brand, and Beach will play, as well as how characters like Jigsaw and Amanda Young will fit into the next instalment. Only time will tell, but Collider will keep you informed of any new developments.
The Saw 10 film will be released on October 27, 2023.
