A Moroccan paraglider flew into Melilla and evaded authorities, officials claimed.

Two witnesses spotted the paraglider while driving around the enclave’s ring road at 6:15pm, the Spanish government’s official in Melilla said Thursday.

Patrols headed to the area but couldn’t find the migrant, the statement said.

Local newspaper El Faro received footage of a paraglider landing near two parallel border fences that are 12 km (7.5 miles) long and 6-10 m high.

The video’s legitimacy is unknown.

Melilla is a significant entry point for Moroccan migrants and refugees entering Europe. According to the Spanish interior ministry, 1,155 undocumented migrants crossed the land border this year through October 15.

The strongly guarded border is one of two between the EU and Africa, the other being Ceuta, a Spanish enclave.

In June, 2,000 individuals attempted to cross and were killed by border agents.

At the time, Morocco’s National Human Rights Council claimed 23 people likely “suffocated.”

Caminando Fronteras reported 37 deaths.

In July, the EU stated it will engage with Morocco to combat human smugglers employing “new, highly harsh methods.”
