Avatar: The Way of Water has been in the works for thirteen years, and we are finally days away from returning to Pandora’s wondrous world.
In the forthcoming episode, we’ll look at a different side of the mythical alien realm, as well as meet some new characters.
Following the unprecedented success of the original film, James Cameron took his time to plot out the script for numerous sequels, and the fundamental subject of the future film is familial ties and how far we will go to protect those we love.
On-screen, that translates to Jake and Neytiri having a family, with a Na’vi teenager, Kiri, played by the director’s long-time colleague Sigourney Weaver, as one of the additions.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the performer discussed how she battled to build her new role.
In the original film, Weaver portrayed Dr. Grace Augustine, the chief of the Avatar mission, who was the antagonist and was swallowed into the Tree Of Life by the end of the film.
So, when Weaver’s casting was announced, people immediately speculated on how Grace could be brought back, as it was difficult to believe what had happened to her based on the final graphics.
When her new character, Kiri, was revealed, all speculations were put to rest. “The concept for Kiri came from, well, is Grace truly dead?” says Cameron. “I thought, hang on, there’s this avatar,” he continued. “I thought, hang on, there’s this avatar. What could I do with the idea of bringing Sigourney back, playing a kid? It was just a fun idea. I couldn’t get it out of my head.”
Weaver, on the other hand, was “overjoyed” to be recast as the Na’vi adolescent. Despite this, the actor claimed that she was unhappy with her character’s initial look, which she described as “too tidy and lovely.”
Finally, the actor and director agreed on a more uncomfortable adolescent Kiri. Weaver described Kiri as a “normal adolescent” with a “strong passion for all things in the world, critters, plants, everything” in a separate interview.
So it stands to reason that she cannot be too lovely or clean. Cameron’s vision has been praised by the entire cast, and it certainly pays off in the magnificent sights of the next film.
The film also stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Kate Winslet, Stephen Lang, and child performers Jamie Flatters, Chloe Coleman, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, and others, in addition to Weaver.
Avatar: The Way of Water will be released on December 15. You may see the trailer below:
