Killer of police officers David Bieber gets second life sentence for attack on jail

A man who killed a police officer and then attacked a prison officer in a “frenzied” way by stabbing her with a metal bar got a second life sentence.

When he attacked Alison Smith at HMP Long Lartin in August 2017, David Bieber was serving a life sentence for shooting PC Ian Broadhurst in Leeds in 2003.

A court heard that she was lucky not to get hurt badly or even die.

At a trial in June, the 56-year-old man was found guilty of trying to hurt someone and having a weapon without permission.

He was given his sentence on Tuesday at Worcester Crown Court. Earlier, he had been found not guilty of trying to kill someone.

The former US marine and bodybuilder hurt Ms. Smith in a 10-second attack with a homemade spiked iron bar, which the court heard could have been “deadly.”

He grabbed her by the neck with one arm and “launched a frenzied attack,” Judge Nicholas Cartwright said. He punched her in the face with the weapon’s handle and tried to stab her in the face many times.

The attack left Ms. Smith with “a permanent mental health condition” that makes it hard for her to do everyday things and work, the court heard.

Bieber said that the attack was done to get him moved back to HMP Belmarsh in London and that HMP Long Lartin, near Evesham in Worcestershire, had stopped giving him his painkillers.
