Moscow’s dismal months are November and December. The weather is too chilly and wet to go outdoors much yet too warm and rainy to enjoy a real Russian winter.

This year, the sight of shuttered shops on many of the capital’s streets adds to the melancholy as companies endure the economic fallout from significant Western sanctions in reaction to the Ukraine war, which Russian officials officially characterize as a “special military operation.”

Film producer Lisa, 34, said Moscow and the country are dismal, quiet, intimidated, and forlorn. “Planning horizon is low.” People don’t know what tomorrow or next year will bring.

While most stores remain well-stocked, Western products are growing scarce and pricey, squeezing many Russian households.

Lisa stated, “Familiar products are disappearing, from toilet paper to clothes.”

“You can get used to this, it’s not too bad,” she remarked.

She also criticized Western governments and firms that fled the Russian market over Ukraine.

Lisa: “I don’t know how this helps resolve the problem because it impacts ordinary people, not decision-makers.”
