Nusret Gokce, aka ‘Salt Bae,’ loves controversy. Nusr-Et in Abu Dhabi has hiked its rates after being criticised for being too costly in London.

The chef uploaded a photo of a customer’s AED 615,065 (nearly Rs 1.3 crore) bill at The Galleria on Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi.

The patron ordered five Petrus and two Petrus 2009, one of the world’s most costly wines, according to the check dated November 17, 2022.

They cost over 1 crore, and VAT was over 6.5 lakh.

Salt Bae’s Instagram post about the bill, “Quality never expensive,” was criticised for not being a brag.

“$45 for an order of french fries? Are they potatoes grown at [sic] the moon? $55 for a Heineken? Hahaha a 12 pack?,” Many of Salt Bae’s upset followers unfollowed him over the post.

“I first followed you thinking you will be a great example for youth. I saw a self-made successful person, who was once poor, and will inspire others to value hard work. This isn’t the price of your barely medium quality burgers Nusret. This is the cost of your show of privilege, and extravagant lifestyle of those who can afford it..and guess what? You’re so CHEAP,”  said one commenter.

A viral video turned meme shows the chef “suavely” salting steak. In January 2017, it went viral, earning the butcher the nickname “Salt Bae.”
