- Shoaib Malik gets emotional as he recalls Younis Khan heart warming gesture
- Shoaib Malik served as captain of Pakistan Cricket Team for two years
- Pakistan and England will play in the T20 World Cup’s championship game
Former Captain Shoaib Malik has a surge of emotion as he thinks of the kind heart warming gesture by Younis Khan during the ICC T20 Worldcup 2009. Remembring some moments of ICC T20 Worldcup 2007, when India defeated Pakistan by just 5 runs in Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg. Shoaib Malik stated:
“When we won the final in 2009, he called me and said you hold the trophy & that was very special.”
Malik was suggested as a candidate for the captaincy along with Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf when Inzamam-ul-Haq resigned as Pakistan’s captain following the 2007 World Cup. Malik, a younger player and the obvious candidate after Younus Khan’s denial, was considered as a new beginning following the Inzamam era.
Malik served as captain for two years. On January 27, 2009, Younis Khan succeeded Malik as captain following a poor showing against Sri Lanka. Malik captained Pakistan for two years during which time they competed in three tests, losing two and drawing one, 36 ODIs, winning 24 of them, and 17 T20Is, winning 12.
Now, after 13 years under the captaincy of Babar Azam, Pakistan and England will play in the T20 World Cup’s championship game on November 13, 2022. To win their second trophy in the tournament’s history, both nations will compete fiercely. In 2009, Pakistan had won the trophy, while England had won the title the following year. By historical standards, England currently has the upper hand over Pakistan, but the unpredictable T20 format gives both sides an equal chance to recapture the title.
