Neil Gaiman on Delirium’s Season 2 Casting in The Sandman

  • Since Neil Gaiman enjoys interacting with readers of his works
  • Neil Gaiman was asked about casting for Season 2 of “The Sandman”
  • Fans are wondering what will happen to characters from the graphic novel who haven’t yet appeared.

Since Neil Gaiman enjoys interacting with readers of his works, it has been entertaining to watch him do so while The Sandman: Season 1 has been streaming on Netflix. Fans are asking what will happen to the characters from the graphic novel who have yet to appear on the show now that it has been renewed for Season 2. Delirium is one of such characters. In reference to Mason Alexander Park, who notably entered the Desire casting pool on social media and won the job, Gaiman, who is well-known on Tumblr, was asked, “Have the castings started yet for the next Sandman season? (Just asking, not trying to pull a Mason)”

Gaiman replied, “Not yet. We only got officially formally confirmed this week,” but he also shared some insider casting knowledge with his fans, including how applying for a role while not being an actor won’t really work. Which I love to see as someone who majored in performance theatre and spent years studying acting. Not because it’s impossible for fans to imagine themselves in their favourite works, but rather because it takes a lot more effort than simply dressing up and pretending to understand the character’s motivations.

Gaiman said he was looking forward to casting Delirium after looking into the casting procedure. I can only image how incredible Season 2 of The Sandman will be with the characters we haven’t yet met, given how excellent the casting for Season 1 of the show was.

Gaiman did go on to talk about how saying “Oh I’m like this character” isn’t the casting pull that really works. The author wrote:

“(And as a reminder to everyone out there who wants to act, “I’m a lot like Delirium in real life” is not the hard-sell casting slam dunk many of you seem to think it is. If you’re going to be in Sandman you need to be an actor, you need to have credits, we need to know not only that you’re brilliant but that you’re also reliable, and that you know how to act for TV — can you do the same scene two dozen times, and still say the lines every time as if this is the first time you’ve ever said them? Can you be funny and break people’s hearts at the same time?)”
