Musk: Twitter will prohibit unlabelled parody accounts

Elon Musk warns Twitter accounts who impersonate without identifying as parody would be permanently suspended.

In a series of tweets, he said Twitter will no longer warn before suspending accounts.

The new owner fired half the company’s employees last week.

He affirmed plans to sell blue-tick verified status.

“Previously, we provided a warning before suspension,” Mr. Musk tweeted about the new parody account rules.

“Any name change will cause temporary loss of verified checkmark,” he said.

Kathy Griffin and Chris Kluwe, among others, had their accounts blocked or put behind a warning message after changing their names to Elon Musk and mocking the billionaire.

Tim Heidecker’s Trump parody account is still active.

Mr. Musk opposes permanent Twitter bans, including Mr. Trump’s official account. Last week, Mr. Musk said banned accounts would not be reinstated unless there was “a clear mechanism”.

Sunday’s New York Times claimed that Twitter was delaying the delivery of verification check marks to its new service subscribers until after Tuesday’s US midterm elections. The social media site’s website app started charging $8 (£7) a month for its blue, verified checkmark over the weekend.

On Friday, the billionaire said Twitter was losing more than $4m per day, leaving him “no choice” except to fire half of its 7,500 employees.

Twitter may reduce content control due to the cuts and Mr. Musk’s free speech stance.

Mr. Musk claims the company’s attitude on damaging content is “completely unchanged”. In an open letter, UN human rights chief Volker Turk warned Twitter not to propagate abusive content.
