Luke Evans is appreciative of the help Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman provided him with when it came to creating his new album, A Song for You.
The 43-year-old musician and actor talk about his new album, his second, which is currently out, as well as how Kidman, 55, contributed to the album’s “Say Something” cover by A Great Big World.
Evans claims Kidman invited him over for dinner one night and the rest is history, noting that he knew Kidman “liked to sing” and the two “would often talk about music while we were on the set of [the television series] Nine Perfect Strangers.”
We discussed my debut CD, which she informed me she and Keith enjoyed and believed had a fantastic voice, he recalls. “After we finished filming the show, I went to their house for dinner one night while I was still in Sydney, and we all started singing around the piano at one point. I’ll never forget that great evening because it was so wonderful. It was quite unique.”
Evans knew he wanted to approach Kidman to sing a duet on his upcoming album when he realized she would be a great addition, but he wasn’t sure if she would accept the invitation.
He explains, “I simply thought, ‘I’m going to just take a chance and see if she would say ‘yes’ — and she did. I know they’re musical, they love music, and it fills their lives. We were able to decide on the song together, and once she finished her part in Nashville, I finished mine in London. It was a great moment.
Following 2019’s At Last, Evans’ second studio album is titled A Song for You. He claims that “a lot of work and a lot of time was put into this” in order to release the LP.
A Song for You includes a number of other versions in addition to his duet of “Say Something” with Kidman, including “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” “Everybody Hurts,” and “Over the Rainbow,” as well as two Christmas songs, “Last Christmas” and “Silent Night.”
Evans tells that this album is “quite different” from his 2019 record since it “is more ballad-based throughout the whole thing.”
He continues, laughing, “I didn’t chose easy tunes, regrettably, but it’s where my voice rests quite well. “These are really big songs, but they’re just the ones I’ve always loved to sing. I figured I’d put 14 of them on one CD since they make me feel wonderful, and sometimes we all need a song to do that.”
On the album, Evans included two original songs: “Busy Breaking Yours” and “Horizons Blue,” the latter of which was made available as a single.
According to Evans, the song “is the second song I’ve ever written and it’s about falling in love and the suddenness of everything that happens when you meet someone. You will always remember that time.”
He adds: “I’m a great fan of George Michael and Adele, and I know that their music frequently stems from their love. Their songs can take you on a trip that is terrible, wonderful, or hopeful. So, with these songs—of which “Horizons Blue” is one—I want you to do that.”
A very different kind of song, “Busy Breaking Yours” is more about regret and tells a sincere tale about what you may have done differently if you could go back in time. says Evans. It’s a depressing song, but it has a lot of power.
Evans says he has no immediate plans to release a follow-up album, but he is willing to do so if his fans want it.
He tells, “I think there’s no reason why I can’t do both if I can sing and do my acting and enjoy them both, and people want to watch me and listen to me do these things.
Evans continues, “They make me really happy, so if people like it and want to hear more, I’ve got a lot more to give.
Given the popularity of his song with Kidman, one concept he has for a potential third album is a collection of duets.
Evans doesn’t hold back when asked about certain singers he’d love to collaborate with. “I adore Pink and would want to sing alongside Lizzo, Adele, Barbra Streisand, or Lizzo. Wow, I’m a huge Pink fan “He claims. “And sure, oh my God. Gaga, Lady! Yes, of course. I have really high goals.”
