Authorities in Brazil claim to be looking into footage from a gathering in the city of Sao Miguel do Oeste, Brazil, in which individuals can be seen doing the “Nazi salute.”
The demonstration, which took place in front of a military office in the city, appeared to be one of several demonstrations held outside military bases on Wednesday by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s supporters in protest of the results of the presidential run-off election on Sunday, in which Bolsonaro’s bid for reelection was defeated by leftist former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
In the video, which was uploaded to Twitter, a group of individuals are shown waving and hoisting the Brazilian flag, with several of them also appearing to be doing the Nazi salute as the national anthem of Brazil is playing.
Nazi incitement is a crime in Brazil. The Federal Prosecutor’s office of Santa Catarina State said in its statement that is already working “to identify people who gave the Nazi salute during rallies that were supposed to be democratic and peaceful.”
“Once identified, a report will be produced and the information will be forwarded to the Public Prosecutor for accountability of those involved,” prosecutor Marcela de Jesus Fernandes said.
