- Rain-hit T20 World Cup match between New Zealand and Afghanistan washed out.
- Ireland beat England by five runs via the Duckworth-Lewis method following multiple interruptions.
- Second match of the day was due to start at 1.30 PM but rain forced players indoors.
After rain fell in the 15th over of England’s innings, Ireland won by five runs using the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method. The match against Australia on Friday, also in Melbourne and with a similar weather forecast, becomes a virtual elimination game, with neither side able to afford defeat.
An exciting achieving between Ireland and England. It’s not the first time Ireland has overshadowed an English team. With a little rain, Ireland was 5 runs ahead of the DLS par score after 14.3 overs. At the Melbourne Cricket Ground, there was a massive upset.
Earlier, Mark Wood (3/34), Liam Livingstone (3/17), and Sam Curran (2/31) all contributed to England limiting Ireland to 157 runs. Ireland appeared to be in command at one point. Andy Balbirnie (62) and Lorcan Tucker (34) put on an 82-run stand for the second wicket, but once Tector was out, Ireland’s innings went downhill. To win the match, England will need 158 runs.
