A 6-foot RSPCA dog found a home after two years. Basher, a three-year-old mastiff, was hard to place.
In July 2018, RSPCA Cornwall Branch’s William and Patricia Venton Animal Centre in St Columb adopted him after 18 months in other rescue centres. “Basher was rescued in January 2020 and moved around rescue centres as we struggled to find adopters who were willing to take him on due to his size and his challenges,” said Sammy Howard from RSPCA Cornwall. Most of his caregivers are shorter than him.
“While he’s a big lad, he’s absolutely soppy gentle giant, and we all truly fell in love with him during his time with us but were so desperate to find him the perfect home.”
In September, Basher was adopted a few miles from the RSPCA after 32 months in care and at least three failed adoptions.
A rescue centre employee shared Anna’s story on Facebook.
“I’d just moved into a new home and had been thinking about getting another dog; I could see it working here for Basher as we’re very isolated and rural and have over five acres,” she said.
Anna took Basher for walks at the centre.
“I didn’t realise how desperate they were,” she said. I asked the behaviourist if he had a good soul to solve other problems. She then said she knew we were meant to be together and that he would be okay.
I could tell he just needed someone to give him a chance and time to settle into a new home and lifestyle.
