England and Ireland will play in the T20 World Cup 2022 Super 12 Group 1 match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday (October 26). England began their World Cup campaign with a win, although a hard-fought one, over Afghanistan in their first match. Ireland, on the other side, was defeated by Sri Lanka by nine wickets after outstanding performances in the first round.
After dominant performances against Pakistan and Australia prior to the World Cup, England is considered one of the favourites to win the current event. They got off to a good start against Afghanistan, limiting them to 112 runs while bowling first. In the Afghanistan encounter, England’s in-form bowler Sam Curran claimed five wickets, while Ben Stokes and Mark Wood each took two.
However, Afghanistan’s bowlers posed a stiff challenge, forcing England’s batters to work hard for a victory. England won by five wickets but needed 18.1 overs to reach the mark. Despite Liam Livingstone’s undefeated 29-run knock off 21 balls, the English top-order failed to get going against the Afghan pace attack. England presently is in third place in Group 1 with two points in hand.
Pitch Conditions:
In white-ball cricket, the pitch at Melbourne Cricket Ground offers a balanced surface that could benefit both batsmen and bowlers. The surface was hard and there was a little grass in the last match here, which certainly assisted the pacers with the new ball. As a result, fans can expect another exciting battle between bat and ball on Wednesday.
