Brittney Griner was “wrongfully jailed” after a Russian court upheld her conviction. said US Embassy Charge d’Affaires Elizabeth Rood.
“It is honestly tragic that Ms. Griner had to spend her birthday last week in a Russian prison rather than at home with her family and on the basketball court with her teammates,” Rood told reporters outside the Moscow Regional Court.
“The United States Embassy in Moscow has no higher priority than the welfare of all US citizens detained in Russia whether wrongfully detained or not. We will work very hard to ensure their fair treatments and their welfare — this is what we’re here to do,” she continued.
“Nothing in the previous sentence, nothing in the result of today’s appeal changes the fact that the United States government considers Griner to be wrongfully detained,” said Rood, the top American ambassador in Moscow.
