President Joe Biden has made it plain that WNBA star Brittney Griner “should be released immediately,” according to US national security adviser Jake Sullivan, who commented on a Russian court’s decision to sustain Griner’s conviction today.
“We are aware of the news out of Russia that Brittney Griner will continue to be wrongfully detained under intolerable circumstances after having to undergo another sham judicial proceeding today,” Sullivan said. “President Biden has been very clear that Brittney should be released immediately.”
Sullivan praised the families’ “courage” as their loved ones remain incarcerated in Russia and emphasized once more that the Biden administration is striving to get Griner and Paul Whelan back home and is in communication with representatives of the families.
Former Marine Whelan has been imprisoned in Russia since 2018.
The Biden-Harris administration has recently kept up communication with Russia via all channels possible in an effort to bring Brittney home as well as to support and fight for the rights of other Americans jailed in Russia, such as Paul Whelan, a fellow unjust detainee, said Sullivan. The President has shown that, as his Administration has done effectively from a variety of nations across the world, he is prepared to go to incredible lengths and make difficult choices in order to bring Americans home.
