LAHORE: The Chief Election Commissioner(CEC) has ordered to write a letter to the Punjab government to provide documents on the issue of local body elections in the province.
According to the details, a three-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja heard the issue of of local body elections in Punjab.
During the hearing, Special Secretary of Election Commission Zafar Iqbal said that constituencies have been demarcated twice in Punjab and now it will be done for the third time. A copy of the rules is also required for making constituencies.
On the other hand, Chief Secretary Punjab Kamran Ali said that soon we will demarcate the constituencies, one constituency will be formed for every 25,000 population.
In this regard, the Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja has ordered to write a letter to the Punjab government to provide the documents.
The Chief Election Commissioner said that write a letter to the Punjab government that we need documents to be provided.
Sikandar Sultan said that the third local government constituency in Punjab is not a joke. Can the Election Commission hold elections on the old constituencies if so, then release the schedule?
He said that the Election Commission has to see that it can conduct local elections based on the old law. If the Election Commission can conduct local elections based on the old law, it will release the schedule of local elections in Punjab today.
The Chief Election Commissioner said that if local elections are to be held based on the new law, Chief Secretary Punjab should assure us. He said no government wants to hold local elections.
Apart from this, the Chief Election Commissioner has also ordered to file a contempt of court petition against the Punjab government in the Supreme Court.
He said that now the Election Commission will direct the Chief Secretary and pass the order, the Punjab Assembly has approved the new bill and it will become law in ten days.
Sikandar Sultan said that according to the new law we will follow the timeline. EVL’s case was deliberately tampered with in the law.
