Will Heartbreak High’s teen Australian revival on Netflix make a second season after its September 2022 debut?
We now have official proof that the show was renewed in early October, contrary to earlier rumours. Here is what we know thus far about Netflix’s Heartbreak High’s second season.
The series was eventually released on September 14th, 2022, after being first announced in December 2020.
It debuted to rave reviews from critics, who praised the show’s diversity for including characters of all racial backgrounds, genders, and disabilities.
Netflix Australia announced that we would be back for a second season on October 19.
According to the press release: “School is officially back in session, as Netflix has announced Heartbreak High will return for Season 2.
Produced by Fremantle Australia and NewBe, season 2 of Heartbreak High will see the talented cast and creators reassemble in Sydney (Gadigal, Dharug, Dharawal and Ku-ring-gai lands), Australia for pre-production and filming.”
As you can see from the table of contents, the show had a difficult time gaining traction outside of Australia on Netflix.
There were undoubtedly several causes for this (not the least of which was that representatives for the show aggressively discouraged media attention), but despite this early setback, the series continued to find a following and do well financially.
The series had been given a boost thanks to TikTok, according to Michael Sun of The Guardian (who previously served as the culture editor at Netflix Australia).
This phenomena has been known to enhance shows like Ginny & Georgia and Purple Hearts. The show has 12.5 billion views on TikTok as of the time of publication, which probably attracted viewers to Netflix.
The Australian newspaper The Daily Telegraph announced on October 2nd that the programme had been renewed for a second season.
Heartbreak High had a bad start on Netflix worldwide, as we said above.
Let’s start with the unprocessed FlixPatrol top 10 Netflix figures.
The programme only made it as far as #5 in Australia in the early going before peaking at #1 on September 21 and 22, followed by a decline.
Below is a heatmap showing the regions of the world where the show did the best. Naturally, Australia and New Zealand had the biggest numbers, but South Africa and Eastern European nations also did well.
Moving on, the absence of Heartbreak High from Netflix’s top 10 site in week 1 suggests that the audience size was lower than 12.22M. This prompted us to write that Heartbreak High was regarded as a failure.
Viewership increased as a result of the show’s popularity on social media, and it appeared in the top 10 for weeks two and three, with an especially outstanding hold from the second to the third week.
Between September 18 and October 9, 2022, the programme garnered 42.61 million hours internationally while remaining in the top 10 of all English-language TV for 3 weeks.
